About That Fort 60 Feet Off the Ground
Sure, it looks like one of those hunting perches usually seen in forests, but the scaffolding south of City Hall East that people started asking about last week is actually a piece of urban art. It's called "Kariforunia" and is part of the Museum of Contemporary Art's new exhibit, Ecstasy: In and About Altered States. Japanese artist Tatsurou Bashi's idea was to challenge perceptions of everyday items - in this case, a flagpole. To that end, crews erected 60 feet of scaffolding and topped it with a shipping container, with the flagpole running smack through the middle of it. The space has been decorated as a bedroom room. Visitors who sign a waiver can climb a staircase to see the flag at eye level. For now, the unexpected artwork is a little confusing because signs have yet to be installed. "We're working on that," said Heidi Simonian, a MOCA spokeswoman, who tried climbing the exhibit last week but turned back. "I got scared. It's pretty high," she admitted. "But if you're not afraid of heights and can climb up the stairs, it's a great exhibit." "Kariforunia" will be in place through Nov. 30, Thursday-Monday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Ecstasy: In and About Altered States ends Feb. 20 at the Geffen Contemporary, 152 N. Central Ave. Call (213) 626-6222 or moca.org.
