Supervisor Meetings Now Online

Though not known for its high Nielsen ratings, the County Board of Supervisors announced last week that it is offering constituents the option to watch any of its board meetings since 2003 online in their entirety. "We've had the capabilities for some time," said Judy Hammond, director of public affairs for Los Angeles County. "It was just one of those things where the light bulb came on." The archives come in addition to a website that the Board of Supervisors has operated since 2003, which allows viewers to select specific segments of a meeting along with the related transcript. According to Hammond, the Board of Supervisors has been telecasting for several years, but officials believed that the footage, which shows at 10 p.m. Wednesday nights on cable access, was not reaching enough people. "We have a number of audiences for them," Hammond said. "I'm a big champion of the Internet and what we can do with public information." Hammond also said that employees and people who appear before the board can use the site to recall requests made by the board members. The video is available at lacounty.info/transcripts.htm.
